Fermentation Sciences Revisited 

The Fermentation Sciences department at Appalachian State University studies and concocts a multitude of fermented products, spreading knowledge and (good) bacteria as far as the High Country can see. As this logo is based on a previous collaboration from 2015, the student body approached me with interest in the logo for personal use. 

With the goal of creating a brand identity that captures the academic component of fermentation sciences as well as its breadth, a system of icons enveloped in hexagonal connections (referencing the chemical structures involved in the compounds created during the complex process) were developed that could be used for any kind of fermented product that would be manufactured by the department.
